Grocery gift cards fuel learning at Step by Step early childhood program

Sep 10, 2025

Step by Step Early Intervention Society is one of I Can for Kids’ newest community partners. They provide exceptional early childhood education and supports for developmentally delayed and disabled children and their families. Their teachers and staff see firsthand the link between nutrition and learning.

“For preschool-aged children, nutrition is essential for healthy brain development, energy, and focus,” says Lyndsay Smith, Principal. “With proper nourishment, children are better able to concentrate, manage their emotions, and fully engage in play-based learning.”

For young children with developmental delays, insufficient nutrition creates a compounded barrier – poor cognitive engagement and learning are amplified by the constraints they already face. “Ensuring consistent access to nutritious food is not just a health need – it’s a foundational learning support,” says Lyndsay.

Children with disabilities also often experience heightened sensitivities that can make mealtimes more challenging and limit food options. “This can place added stress on parents who are working hard to ensure their child is well-fed and supported,” notes Lauren Ferris, Family Services Manager.

Ensuring every child has the opportunity to thrive

On top of these challenges, some families face financial stressors relating to raising a child with a disability – pushing some into food insecurity. That’s why all Step by Step families have access to the I Can for Kids grocery gift card program on a referral basis from staff who get to know their unique situations.

“The program is especially valuable because it gives families the autonomy to choose foods that meet their child’s unique sensory needs, while also honoring important dietary requirements and cultural traditions,” says Lauren. “This flexibility not only reduces stress but also empowers families to feel confident in providing meals that truly work for them.”

Lyndsay sums it up: “I Can for Kids’ program allows us to support families facing food insecurity, ensuring every child has the opportunity to thrive in the classroom.”

More Alberta kids than ever are growing up in food-insecure homes

More Alberta kids than ever are growing up in food-insecure homes

A food insecurity crisis is gripping Alberta. New data released by Statistics Canada in May show a staggering 1.46 million Albertans now live in food-insecure households – they don’t have enough income to put food on the table, every meal, every day. This means that nearly 2 in 5 kids in Alberta are growing up without reliable access to enough healthy food, up from 1 in 5 just a few years ago.
